Goddard students
We are delighted to announce that the Robert H. Goddard High School for Communication Arts and Technology in Queens has become an LCI Focus School. For the past three years, Goddard has been working with LCI to meet its arts- and curriculum-based professional development needs. One of the crucial elements that prompted Principal Dr. Joseph J. Birgeles’s decision regarding the long-term commitment is the fact that LCI’s work is aligned with the Common Core Standards.
In Focus Schools, the Institute’s approach to arts and education is integrated across the curriculum and affects all students; teachers participate in intensive professional development workshops and benefit from a wide range of support from the Institute.
Goddard is an inquiry-based school with a strong focus on using technology to maximize student achievement. Its mission is to empower students to be successful leaders, lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and advocates for their college and professional success. Administrators, teachers, support staff, and parents work collaboratively to help the students meet and exceed their potential.
“Being an LCI Focus School will help to infuse LCI’s Ten Capacities for Imaginative Learning school-wide,” said Dr. Birgeles. A key to LCI’s success is its passion for using works of art as a point of reference for teachers and students to have meaningful and in-depth conversations about the content contained in Math, Science, English and Social Studies.Dr. Birgeles also said LCI helps to encourage “a positive influence in supporting our vision for embracing the arts in education” and using the arts as a trigger for student achievement. This approach, he said, has “helped benefit all the major stakeholders in our building.”
